Hello - my 12 year old Lennox Dimension A/C is not starting. When the thermostat calls for "Cool" I hear it click, and the blower starts blowing in the house, but notice a humming noise outside by the unit. Not sure what the issue is but is there something that can be done to avoid having it serviced? Wondering what a common cause would be to this. I notice that the lights in the house blink now when the thermostat calls for Cool which I don't remember ever noticing either. Seems like a power/type issue but I'm not certain.

Thanks in advance!
Capn

Check line voltage fuses and breakers to the outdoor unit. That is a good place to start.

Sounds like your capacitor is bad on the condenser

I just joined this forum today so I hope I'm doing this correctly. I have an almost 6year old Lennox xc21 condenser outside. It is not running. Nothing comes on. I did some testing and determined the contactor to be faulty . I changed it and it still doesnt work. I tested the capacitor it seems to be within range. I did notice the Emerson comfort alert(?) black box has no led 's lighting up. Not sure if this is getting power. I could really use some help here . Thanks so much folks.

CbKcarp: How did you determine that the contactor was defective?

Here you can check few things that will help you to save money and time:

1. Have you checked the air filter?
2. Are there batteries in the thermostat?
3. Has the circuit breaker been tripped?
4. Have you checked the switch on the indoor unit?
5. What about the condensation pump and/or A/C drain line?
